  • What Is AWRS?

    The Alcohol Wholesaler Registration Scheme (AWRS) is an application process that is administered by HM Revenue & Customs and is a requirement for anyone who sells, offers or arranges the sale of alcohol to another business on or after the point at which exercise duty is payable. Ooberstock is registered under AWRS with the following Unique Reference Number (URN): XSAW00000101812 

  • Who Needs AWRS?

    If any of the following actions apply to your business then you will need to apply for AWRS: 
    - your business sells, or arranges the sale of alcohol, and has an establishment in the UK
    - your sales are made at, or after, the point where Excise Duty is due 
    - any sales to other businesses are made for onward sale or supply

  • How Do I Apply?

    You can apply via the HMRC Government website where you will be taken through all the approporiate steps to register.

  • What Information Do I Need To Apply?

  • When Do I Need To Apply?

    If you are a current wholesaler you will need to have applied by 1st April 2016 whereby your business application will be assessed by HMRC over the course of the year. If you are a business whos buys from other wholesale businesses you will have to apply by the 1st April 2017 and recieve a Unique Reference Number (URN) by HMRC. For any new wholesale businesses that have opened after 31st March 2016, you must register online at least 45 days before you begin trading and await confirmation from HMRC directly.

  • What Are The Penalties For Not Having AWRS?

    If you do not apply for AWRS and you still trade alcohol in the UK you can be subject to one/all of the following:
    - Your registration can be revoked
    - All goods attributed to your business may be seized
    - Fines for poor record keeping, starting from £500 to each breach
    - A new civil penalty can be administed of up to £10,000 if trading unauthorised
    - Imprisonment
    As an AWRS registered company, Ooberstock holds the right to refuse trading with any customers not set up with an AWRS number. 

  • How Do I Know When I Am Registered?

    You will receive a notification via your government gateway account. You will receive your URN number. Once registered however, you may receive specific conditions which HMRC imposed on you to ensure you continue to qualify to trade in alcohol
